The stories, War of the Worlds, and Zero Hour, written by H.G Wells and Ray Bradbury both create scenes of tranquility and peace that turns into terror and destruction. In both stories, the author shows how the characters aren’t as scared and frantic until they find out what the Martians are capable of.

There are many similarities shared between these stories such as, in both stories, the characters aren’t scared in the beginning, until they see the Martians and what they could do. This quote from Zero Hour, ““There, there. We’re safe until tonight. Maybe we can sneak out. Maybe we can escape.”(Bradbury 259) and “Quiet. They’ll hear us. Oh, gosh, they’ll find us soon enough-”(Bradbury 259) are resembling the fear the Martians create, and the uncertainty the humans have when trying to see what they could do to defend themselves. In War of the Worlds they have machines that include Heat Rays but in Zero Hour they use their powers instead. This is shown in these quotes from both Zero Hour and War of the Worlds. “Footsteps. A little humming sound. The attic lock melted.”(Bradbury 260). The Martians have powers the humans don’t. The quote shows how the Martians used their power to melt the attic door. Therefore, they have an advantage against them. And in this quote, “At sight of these strange, swift, and terrible creatures the crowd near the water’s edge seemed to me to be for a moment horror-struck.”Wells 269) which provided description of the scene of terror the humans were facing when they saw the Martians attack the town with the Heat Ray, and it also shows how there is less hope in the thought of winning this battle against them.
