When you go through a tough time in life, it can be hard to get through it on your own. However when someone helps you it can be comforting to get support. In the memoir, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, Melba and 8 other students volunteer to begin integration at Central High School. Many of the other students at Central are cruel and unkind to the Little Rock 9. However, Melba gets assigned a 101st soldier for a bodyguard and also makes a new friend,Link, that helps and emotionally supports her to get her through this tough situation.

After Melba got acid sprayed in her eyes by another student Danny helped her wash it out of her eyes. While Melba is getting her eyes checked by the doctor, he states “ Whoever kept that water in her eyes saved the quality of her eyesight” Also Melba thinks “Thank you for saving my eyes. God bless Danny.” (p123). Also, Danny disobeyed his orders to talk to Melba because she was worried that he would leave. Melba states “... when Danny broke the rules again and came close up to talk to me. He wouldn't say whether or not he was leaving for good.” (p.138). This was the second time that he broke the rules to talk to Melba to let her not worry about him. And finally Danny taught her to be a warrior and not let people push her around. After Melba gets choked by another student and tells Danny it's too late to defend herself, but Danny states “It's never too late. It takes a warrior to fight a battle and survive.
