What is the Warsaw Ghetto? What is its purpose? What was the ultimate intent of placing Jews in the ghetto? When was it established? During WWII, the Nazi leadership forced Jewish citizens of Warsaw, Poland, to live in a designated area known as the Warsaw Ghetto during “the fall of 1940” (USHMM). This Ghetto was labeled as “the largest Ghetto in Europe” (Yad Vashem). The Nazi's main goal was to separate and control the Jewish population by limiting their freedom of movement, limiting their access to water, food, and other necessities, and later on forcing them into concentration camps. The Jews in Warsaw Ghetto resisted the Nazis for nearly a month despite being greatly outnumbered before ultimately being defeated. The Rebellion represented the Jewish people's enduring spirit and will in the face of unspeakable suffering and served as an inspiration for additional acts of resistance across Europe. Poland celebrates the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Remembrance of the Jewish Defenders and civilians who gave their lives in the uprising. Ceremonies, monuments, and celebrations honoring those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom and dignity are held on the anniversary of the Rebellion. Poland guarantees that the legacy of resistance and strength will never be forgotten and the Lessons Learned From the Past will continue to inspire future generations to reject injustice by remembering the Jewish Ghetto uprising.
