Some may think that Brutus was not a patriot, but a betrayer. This thought comes from the fact that Brutus went behind the back of his friend, Julius Caesar. This action; however, had a good reason behind it. Brutus had thought that killing Caesar would be best for his country and with knowing this, he carried out the action in hopes that the people of Rome would think of him as an honorable and true patriot instead of a betrayer. He states this in the play by saying: “If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” By saying this, Brutus explains his true intentions and his reasoning behind killing his friend.

One may also think that Brutus was a betrayer because he took the lead in the conspiracy. This; however, isn’t a fair accusation because Cassius had tricked him. He had lied to Brutus and manipulated him into believing something wasn’t true. Because he knew that Brutus wouldn’t do something as extreme as killing Caesar without a good reason behind it, he lied to him. With knowing this, I believe that Brutus was exactly that. He was an honorable man who based his actions of the well being of his country. He did what he thought would be best for the people of Rome and unlike the rest of the conspirators, Brutus did not kill Caesar out of jealousy.
