Although John Brown’s methods were extreme, he was a hero because of the purpose of his revolution. John Brown believed himself to be God’s servant to help free slaves. This search for freedom is similar to other controversial historical heroes. Examples of this include Thomas Jefferson and Christopher Columbus. Both are considered controversial because Jefferson is accused of the raped a minor and the Columbus was responsible for the genocide of Native Americans. John Brown’s actions were for on behalf of a heroic and violent cause because slavery was such an important part of the Southern economy. John Brown’s stance was very brave at this time. His views were not supported, which made his radical ideas even more revolutionary and consequences much greater. Without his dedication then there wouldn't have been a figure for other abolitionist to rally with; therefore John Brown’s actions resulted in slavery being ended by the Civil War.
