After Oedipus realizes who he really is, he states, “In my wretched life, why should I have eyes when nothing I could see would bring me joy? “(Sophocles 1333-1334). This quote proves the amount of shame Oedipus is in. He conveys that his life is nothing but wretched and he gouges his eyes out because he does not think he is worthy of being able to see. He runs away to prevent these events
