The Washington Monument is located in the presidential lands of Washington D.C. It is found near the National Mall and Memorial Parks. The construction was started in 1848 and was finished by 1884. The construction was halted due to an illegal election, lack of funding and the Civil War. The Washington Monument was begun by Robert Mills and finished by Thomas Casey and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. It was built to honor our first president, George Washington.

The purpose for this large stone structure was to remember our past president , General George Washington. It is in the shape of an obelisk or stone pillar. It stands 555 feet tall and is made of marble, granite and Bluestone gneiss. There are 36,491 blocks in the monument. It weighs 81,120 tons. In 1889 ,they put in a elevator and it is still used today by people visiting the Monument.

The Washington Monument had plans to be built before George Washington was ever elected for president. At the time of its completion in 1884, it was the tallest building in the world. In 1982, the Washington Monument was the scene of a hostage crisis. The monument was restored from 1998-2002 at a cost of 15 million dollars. On August 22, 2011 an earthquake damaged the granite and marble structure. 600,00 people visit the monument every year.

In conclusion ,the Washington Monument is an important, meaningful and inspiring landmark. The Washington monument is a symbol of freedom and sacrifice that every American should visit.
