Gerald Murphy, the artist of Watch, was born in 1888 and died at the age of seventy-six in 1964. In 1925, Murphy created Watch using oil on canvas. Watch was Murphy’s most monumental work of art with the massive dimensions of 78 ½ “by 78 7/8 “inches. This painting was quite large and the mere physicality of it demands attention.
I really like this piece of work because it goes into depth of how not only a watch works but how every single piece of technology works. The lines and shapes used in this work of art contribute towards the painting tremendously Most of the lines are bent or contain a curve. On the left I can see the lines that count the seconds and on the top right is the location where the lines are representing hours in roman numerals. This painting also employs to start a contrast between dark and light elements. The colors in this painting were used very carefully to show the importance, and fear of time.

It seems like some kind of serial number which brings the word “manufacture” in my mind. But if I go into more depth about these digits it makes me think about life. Life in the sense of a humans place in time and his/her temporality. The movement of this picture flows well. Everything seems to be going well. The mood created in this painting was one that was contemplative and reflected upon human existence. The scale of this picture may take part in the mood and thought it creates in my mind. This massive piece of work makes me think about the universe. The watch may seem simple as a product designed to represent time but inside it make me consider that a watch actually represents infinity across both time and
