Title
In life, everyones goal is to learn something new every day and become a better person within themselves and towards others. In the novel, Wake, by Robert Sawyer, the theme through out the book is all about evolution through the basic perception of nature and how it shapes our view on reality. It is also about how the social media world plays a major role in todays day and age evolution of the human being. Through out the novel many characters are faced with adversity, the courage they have in risking their safety to over come challenges they face are miraculous. Caitlin Decter, the main character in, is a 15 year old girl who struggles everyday of her life to fit in with the other children in her high school. Caitlin was born with a retina problem where her retina is not able to properly process visual information, making it impossible for her brain to properly read the signals her optic nerve are sending her, resulting in her being blind. Already facing a tremendous amount difficulty living a normal life she also has to deal with the stress of moving countries at such a young age, going from her hometown in Austin, Texas to Waterloo, Ontario where her father, Malcolm Decter has a new job waiting for him. Dr. Masayuki Kuroda is a scientist from Tokyo, Japan who specializes in signal processing relating to the ophthalmic nerve and he reaches out to Caitlin with the belief that he had a device that could help Caitlin regain her vision. Meanwhile in San Diego, California another scientist by the name of Shoshana Glick, an ape language researcher, begins her work with Hobo, an ape who is being used in an experiment to see how different animal species can communicate. Through out the story these three individuals face different challenges that all relate to them having to take risks in order to succeed in the goals they have set.
