Older brothers are supposed to be role models for their younger siblings,and to help them through life. Sadly, some of these brothers hurt their siblings future rather than help them achieve their goals. This was the kind of brother that Byron Watson was to his little brother Kenny, and his younger sister Joetta. He was a disobedient thirteen year old young boy who antagonized many other children who were much younger. The constant bullying, coarseness towards his parents, and setting many fires inside of the upstairs bathroom proves this even further. In the novel the Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis,a young teenager Byron, was forced to move in with his strict grandma Sands because of his absence of mature behavior and many respect issues when he is still in Michigan with the rest of his family. Byron constantly bullies the younger and more vulnerable children, especially his younger brother Kenny. In a snow bank, Byron and his friend Buphead, who is Byron’s main influence when it comes to his tricks, torment Kenny, along with teasing and bullying him. “Byron mumbled my name and turned to see why his voice sounded so funny. The situation brings more tension because Byron’s mother said that the next time that he was caught catching fire in the house, that she would burn his fingers. “Byron got caught lighting matches again, and it looked like this time Momma was going to do what she always said that she would.”(Curtis 64) This proves that he has definitely set fires before, because his mother has to have threatened him before.him because. Byron, even after knowing the consequences still performs the act that will get him in trouble with his parents, and maybe even injured in the process of
