The trial of Wayne Williams began on January 6, 1982. The key evidence in the state’s case against Wayne Williams was the fiber evidence found on the majority of the victims. Also, circumstantial evidence was an important aspect in the trail. This included the testimony of several witnesses. Many testified that they saw Williams with the victims, suggesting that he had solicited sexual favors. On February 27, 1982, over a month after the trail had begun a jury found Wayne Williams guilty of two counts of murder. The jury only deliberated for eleven hours before finding Williams guilty. Wayne Williams was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in the Georgia state prison at Reidsville. The fiber evidence proved intensely that many of the victims had contact with Williams in proximity to their deaths. Witnesses also placed the victim in contact with Williams. Overall the persecution vetted their evidence immensely and proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Wayne Williams was the Atlanta Child Murderer. As stated earlier, DNA evidence was not widely accepted at the time of the Atlanta Child Murders investigation. Today DNA is a staple in large amount of criminal conviction. Had DNA evidence been available during the time of the investigation into Wayne Williams, it would have further proved his guilt. Investigators were able to exclude ninety eight of the world population from a thirty year old DNA sample. It’s a possible that had the evidence been examine thirty years prior it was be an exact match to Wayne Williams.
