The two poems that I have decided to write about are “Suicide Note” by Janice Mirikitani and “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. I have choosing these two poems because the topics that are discuss in the poems are very much relevant in today’s society. “Suicide Note” is a poem that Janice Mirikitani wrote about a female Asian- American college student who committed suicide. The college student’s suicide note was found and in it she was apologizing to her parents. The poem talks about how the Asian young lady felt like she was a big disappointment to her parents. Even though works hard and tries her best she still doesn’t feel like she’s good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, and strong enough. She states that if only she was a boy then her parents would be proud of her but since she’s not she feels like she’s a disappointment mainly because she’s a girl. In the poem Gwendolyn Brooks talks about how some teens think they’re too cool for school so they drop out and run the streets getting into all kinds of trouble and laughing about it. Brooks’ states in the poem how these teens have fell on the wrong path and because of their mentality of them thinking they don’t need an education, these type of kids are the ones who die before their time. This poem is very much so relevant in 2016 because there are still kids today that feel like they are better than school or they’ll to cool for an education. Just like in the poem there are still kids today who thinks it’s cool to run the streets and get into all kinds of trouble. These type of kids who think with this type of mentality end has a very strong possibility of ending up in jail or dying at a young age. Education is key to secure a strong successful future and those who don’t think so and drop out are the ones who are most unlikely to succeed in
