The movie We Were Soldiers is inspired by the book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young, by Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and Joe Galloway; a real life explanation of the first battle of the Vietnam War, written by two men who experienced it first hand. Randall Wallace, the producer of We Were Soldiers approached Moore and Galloway about making their book into a similar movie. In attempt to make every detail of the movie as precise as possible; the actors in the movie were sent to a Fort Benning boot camp run by army rangers, where they were able to shoot vietnam-war era weapons and even wake up for morning runs as the soldiers did.(Freschi, 2002.) The actors were also encouraged to meet Moore, Galloway, Moore’s wife, Sergeant Major Plumley, and Major Bruce Crandall, a helicopter pilot who pulled off twenty-two missions into the valley during the battle.(Freschi, 2002.) The genuine goal of the making of the movie was to accurately portray the battle experiences and general lives of the ordinary men who were soldiers as well, in turn giving the veterans the respect they so desperately deserved. Actor Greg Kinnear was even required to learn how to pilot a chopper specifically for the making of the movie.(Freschi, 2002.) The movie depicts nearly perfectly the way weapons tear through the skin and how bloody and gory things manage to get; it shows so accurately that there is even blood on the camera at times to show how it would really have been with a camera in the middle of a battle like such.
