Several things need to be considered when creating a weight loss program for someone to increase his chances in making the football team. One way to help the roommate reach his goal would be to create a one-month behavior modification program based on operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is learning controlled by the consequences of the organism's behavior (Pearson 216). Exercise and a good diet will be essential in this program, and in order to keep him following the program rewards will be needed to motivate his behavior.
One can start with the program by exercising everyday. The roommate can go to the gym and exercise for half an hour. As he becomes used to the gym, he can increase his time there and the quantity of how much he exercises as well. He will soon see that he is losing weight and maybe even becoming stronger, which motivates him to keep working out. The roommate gets rewarded by strength and weight loss when he goes out to exercise, which should keep him motivated to keep exercising.

He should eat the right amount of fruit and vegetables and he should avoid fatty foods. He should start by diminishing the amount of fatty foods he consumes instead of just cutting them out of his diet completely. Then, as time goes on he should increase his healthy food intake. This should also start making him lose weight and this loss of weight could be considered a reward for his healthy eating habits. He could maybe be rewarded with a desert at the end of the week if he eats healthy for the entire week, so he can be motivated to that end of the week reward and continue to eat
