When the French and Indian war ended in 1763 the colonists celebrated their win, which was soon found to be short lived. Their celebration ended abruptly when they found out that their mother country was in debt. They found out when they were overly taxed for everyday things. What most people don’t know is that they were always being taxed; it just was not enforced because Britain didn’t need it. Soon after that the colonist decided that they were done with Britain and decided to rebel. The only question is; were they justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain? Most say they were, but the truth is they weren’t.
Britain was their mother country; there were colony’s there to help Britain. Without their mother country there would not have been the country now known as America. Britain was in debt because they fought a war to help the colonist make America what it is today. The war was fought for the colonist’s protection and should pay at least some of Britain’s debt to show their gratuity (Document 1). Nothing was gained from the colonies breaking away and therefore it was not justified. Most will say that the colonies gained freedom but they didn’t, when a country is in debt they do anything to get out of debt and that means that the country is not free. The colonies breaking away started a major war which impacted everyone, the countries not fighting had to choose a side. If the colonies were to just help pay off Britain’s debt everyone would have been happy. However that is not what happened, instead everyone suffered and a lot was lost.
