Sofia Coppola is an American screenwriter, director, producer and actress. She was born in Manhattan on May 14th, 1971. She is the third child and only daughter of Francis Ford and Eleanor Coppola. While still in High School, Coppola showed her interest in fashion and design. She modeled for Marc Jacobs in 1964 and at age 15 she interned in Chanel. After graduating from St. Helena High School in 1989, she attended a college in Oakland California. Later on she enrolled at CalArts in Valencia, CA where she studied painting for several years but she decided to drop out. By this time Coppola was in her early twenties and decided to explore different options, the reason why she worked as a photographer for high-end fashion magazines such as Paris Vogue and Allure.
Sofia got into fashion design and along with friend Stephanie Hayman she cofounded the clothing line Milk Fed in Japan. Coppola was the designer while Hayman took charge of production. Over the years the brand became successful and Coppola decided to launch her own boutique store, Heaven-27 to sell products from the brand. Today, the stores are based in Los Angeles and Japan.
Her actress career started when she was a baby in his father’s sequence, The Godfather where she played the role as an infant boy in 1972. Throughout her life she continued to work on her father’s productions, staring on her father’s trilogy in both second and third Godfather films. She also had small roles in other of his films including The Cotton Club, Peggy Sue Got Married among others. In 1984 she performed in Frankenweenie, this being her first time in a production not associated with her father. However, her actress career wasn’t easy, after being criticize and named” Worst Supporting Actress” and Worst New Star” at the Golden Raspberry Awards, for the role she played as Maria Corleone in The Godfather Part III, she ended it.
In 1998 she released her first short-film Lick the Star which was played on the Independent Film Channel. But it wasn’t until 1999 where she made her director debit with The Virgin Suicides, being a complete success. Her second feature was Lost in Translation, released in 2003. Coppola won the Academy Award for her original screenplay and three Golden Globes including Best Picture Musical or Comedy. Coppola became the third female director to be nominated for an Academy Award as a Director and the second to win the Original Screenplay award. Her win for best original screenplay made her a third-generation Oscar winner. And in 2004 she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In 2006 her third film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was and adaptation from the biography of Marie Antoinette written by Antonia Fraser. The film featured Kirsten Dunst who played Marie Antoinette and Jason Schwartzman as King Louis XVI. Even though it earned positive reviews, it failed to catch on with the audiences. However it was nominated for an Academy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design. Its visuals, soundtracks and Dunst’s performance also applauded the movie.
Her fourth film was Somewhere in 2010. The film starred Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. Coppola’s most recent film is The Bling Ring, based on the actual events of a group of California teenagers who burgled the homes of several celebrities during 2008-2009. Celebrities s such as Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Leslie Mann are starring in the film. It opened the Un Certain Regard section to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. In 1999, Coppola married Spike Jonze and they divorced in 2003. She now lives in Paris, France with her
