“This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war” (All Quiet, pg. 2). I feel this quote is an accurate summary that relates this book to the actual time period of World War 1. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque portrays historical relevance to the time of World War 1. I plan to describe the ideas and feelings, new technologies and events, and the perspectives of Europe during that time period.

Some of the book, talks about how Paul and his friends were involved in trench warfare. They had to stand in trenches that they dug in the ground to protect them from enemy fire. The edges were lined with barbed wire to help, as you said in your PowerPoints, to make it more difficult for enemies to enter into the trenches. It was not easy to stay in the trenches. Many of the times, it would be filled with water and some of the soldiers contracted gangrene. That is when skin has been exposed to water for long periods of time and would cause rot and decay of the skin and tissue. Kemmerich, one of Paul’s friends, had gotten it. He ended up having his leg amputated so it would not spread and he eventually died. In the book, they also told of the bombings that happened throughout the war. Remarque described in the book, the shells that would be exploding all around the soldiers. He even described the injuries that the soldiers received from some of the fragments of the shells. Another of Paul’s experiences that were more traumatic was when he was carrying Kat back to get some help; Kat was hit in the head with the fragments and died. We hear many stories from the surviving soldiers of World War 1 that many had died from the shrapnel or just by being blown apart from the bombs that went off around them. All of these events were very traumatic for the soldiers and I have mentioned before none of them were the
