Prior to metrics it is important to make sure that all staff have been properly trained on expectations, requirements, and the new system. In a study performed by the VA it was discovered that the staff did not feel adequately trained in new systems and protocols and that metrics were measured prior to building a secure system impacting the results. It is also important to build a metrics system that is broad-based and meaningful. (Kansagara, Tueper, Joos, Nicolaidis, Skaperdas, & Hickman 607-613). The main goal of Western Pediatric Group is to increase the percentage of patients that are current in preventive services received. In order to monitor these things Western Pediatric Group should review the charts and information in the practice/trial group as they did prior to discussing the problem. This will determine what increase there has been in success of providing preventive services. The nursing, medical records staff, and physicians should document how much time is spent reviewing/preparing charts and providing the preventive care services. After the trial period is completed these numbers should be compiled to determine the extra time spent so it can be compared with the overall benefits. There should also be another document produced to evaluate the impacts on other areas of patient care that are impacted by the increase in preventive services.
