We’re all in “The A Team”
Sometimes one can feel sad and alone; it happens to everyone at one time or another. However, imagine feeling so far gone and consumed in addictions that the only way of escaping reality is death. In the song “The A Team” by Ed Sherran the lyrics make the young woman’s pain feel personal. The song is about a drug addicted prostitute whose life is beyond saving. Throughout, Ed Sherran shows the perspective of the young woman as well as those around her. Even though at first glance “The A Team” seems like it’s simply about someone confused and depressed in life it’s really about how people on the outside can seem like they have it all or like they are on top, but really are the most miserable and the most hurt. The best part of this song is how Ed Sherran uses imagery to make you really think about what’s going on. In the first verse he sings, “White lips, pale face/ breathing in snowflakes/burnt lungs, sour taste” (lines 1-3). This gives the image of her being outside, but later in the song he adds, “But lately her face seems/slowly sinking wasting/crumbling like pastries” (lines 11-13). Knowing that, it makes one realize that the “snowflakes” in the first verse really resemble the drugs and how they are slowly affecting her appearance. Also, because white is the color of purity, it adds to her innocence. In “The A Team” Ed Sherran uses Symbolism to convey images directly to the mind of the reader - it serves like an emotional short-cut. The first lines of the chorus are, “And they say/she’s in the class A Team/stuck in her daydream” (lines 7-9). These are the most powerful lines in the song because of their intense true meaning. Being on “The A Team” implies that she is exceeding above everyone else. Which really brings up the cliché of looks can be deceiving. Although someone may seem like they are perfect and satisfied on the outside, they may be hindering on the inside. The next lines are, “Stuck in her daydream/been this way since 18” (lines 10-11). This symbolizes that she believes things will get better though deep down she knows they won’t because she’s been this way since she was 18 and she has not much of a life to live anymore. Throughout
