Adam’s Equity Theory is a model of motivation which basically states that employees will perform at a more productive rate if they feel that they are being treated fairly (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2010). Equity is achieved when a worker perceives their reward for their amount of work to be equal to that of a relevant worker. Negative inequity is perceived by the employee when the relevant worker receives greater rewards for the same amount of work. Positive inequity is perceived by the employee when the relevant worker receives fewer rewards for the same amount of work (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2010).

Referent Power/Personal Power is internal to you. It is your character, your personality, your intelligence, etc. It is internal and has nothing to do with the position one holds. Anne’s positional power (or legitimate power) is a way to obtain compliance from her employees or cohorts by using her formal authority. Positional power is external and could be taken away from her. It mostly consists of her job title to put her in a position of authority which demands respect. Anne’s personal power (or referent power) is a way of obtaining compliance through her charisma or charm. It is internal to her and cannot be taken away. It includes her character, personality, intelligence, etc. (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2010). She is known for being energetic, enthusiastic, and capable. It has nothing to do with the position she holds. Her personal power can strengthen her positional power. If people respect her for who she is on the inside (personal power) she will not have to resort to using her job title (positional power) to get things accomplished. People will comply because they respect her decisions and not just because she’s the boss.

Positional power refers to the obtaining of compliance through formal authority (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2010). Positional power is external to you. It is your important job title, college degree, etc. It can be taken away from you.
