At the beginning of the Civil war both the North and South had many strengths and weaknesses. Although the South had advantages, the North had far more. The northern United States was known as the Union and the southern states were known as the Confederacy. The North had superior transportation, factories that helped produce weapons and resources for war, and also had a much larger population for working in factories and serving in the military. Though the south did lose the war, they were effectively trained when fighting against the North but they didn’t have the resources nor the troops.
The Union had exceptional transportation in comparison to the Confederacy. The continental railroad played a big part in the Civil War because it was not as efficient in the south and the north used it in an effective way. The South had small disconnected railroads which didn’t help them get food to their soldiers or to transport soldiers, in comparison the north had railroads everywhere and were able to transport troops and food quickly. The north not only made a lot of resources in the factory, but in fact traded with other countries. According to History Today, “In 1860 Northern states produced 97 percent of the USA’s firearms and 94 per cent of its pig iron.” This is a huge advantage for the north. This means that only 3 percent of the guns that the USA made, were made for the south and also, the south barely had any iron compared to the north if they wanted to make weapons. With the north having such exceptional railroads and factories, It made it very easy to make good and trade them with other states and even Countries. “The northern economy was based on many different industries. These industries included shipping, textiles, lumber, furs, and mining.”(Information about the North & South) This just proves how the north was advanced with their
