The Industrial Revolution refers to the greatly increased output of machine made goods that began in England during the mid 1700’s (Chapter 9, Sec 1). The Industrial Revolution arrived in Japan more than a century after its arrival in Europe. The Japanese borrowed ideas from England, America, and Italy on building their cotton mills and silk factories. Female workers faced the same hardships and benefits as those in the West, but the hardships in Japanese Silk Factories were worse making it obvious that the costs outweighed benefits.
In Japanese Silk Factories, women worked 13 to 15 hours a day. A normal working day was from 4:30 am to 7:30 pm, adding up to a total of about 15 hours a day (Doc B). During the busy season, the work day began
