What Are The Sympathetic Characters In The Awakening

In both the Awakening by Kate Chopin and Member of the Wedding by Carson Mculler the protagonists are sympathetic characters. They both experience changes throughout the novel that effect them and drives them to change themselves. But Frankie grows from an irresponsible child into a more mature teen, while Edna goes from a responsible adult to a woman weak to following any desires that may encroach upon her.

Frankie’s transformation comes from her body changing and her longing to be a part of something. While Edna is changing by starting to listen to her for music, sexual satisfaction, art, and freedom that she can no longer bear to keep hidden. Her transformation from a responsible mother to a woman tat follows her desires is started by the experiences she as and the people she meets on the Grand Isle. While Frankie’s growth is spurred by her realizing she is growing because of her father and the want she has to be a member of a group or something because right now shes not really a member of anything. She has alienated her self from the ones who loved her and made choices that she cannot take back. The novel ends with her taking her own life weather it be a move of weakness or one last act of defiance we don’t know. Frances’s path ends with Frances moving to a new place with her father and finding a new friend. She has the possibility of a bright future ahead of her. It will depend what she chooses to do but the novel closes on a positive note for our protagonist.

The Journeys taken by Edna and Frankie are vastly different but are both stories of great change in ones life. One is a story of growth while the other is about a woman breaking societal norms while leaving her family behind. Frankie garners much more sympathy from the reader because she is simply a child trying to find herself in this confusing and beautiful world of
