In 1619 the first slaves were brought to America but no one knew what the future would hold. Most slaves lived in rural areas where they worked on farms and plantations. Most slaves were treated as property and not as actual humans. The slaves were sold at auctions and that is how people bought slaves and brought them to their house. Some slave traders kidnapped free African Americans and sold them into slavery. They did not know that in a few years the country would be divided and war would break out.
