The Civil War started from April 12, 1861 -- May 9, 1865. The Union faced 11 southern states grouped together as the Confederate States of America. In the summer of 1861 there was tension between the Northern and Southern states over issues including State rights vs. Federal rights, Westward expansion and Slavery. There are many reason for the North and the South to have a dispute. Whether the American Dream differences between the two are different there are other issues that could have caused the Civil War. There are main causes that could have caused the Civil War; Economic and social differences, State vs Federal rights, Slave and Non-slaves, Abolitionist movement and lastly The Election of Abraham Lincoln.
The Abolitionist movement was to end slavery and it also ended the African and Indian slave trade. The election of Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery Republican, caused 7 southern states to separate from the Union and form the Confederate States of America. America began to expand ever since the Louisiana purchase, and than with the Mexican - American war. On Chicago 1859, Abraham Lincoln gives a speech and states “ I think slavery is wrong, morally and politically.” Lincoln doesn't approve of racism and he isn’t an abolitionist, he just wants equal rights. Lincoln gives another speech with a audience and he states that America could not be seen “ fostering human slavery and proclaiming ourselves, at the same time, the sole friends off human freedom.” Lincoln can’t see American encouraging the development of slavery and going around saying that we all get along.
