By dwelling in this great nation and recognizing this land as home, one is or at least should be considered an American. The issues that lie or float to the surface is “What is an American exactly and what are the qualifications to be such?”. Per the assignment handout, the word ‘American’ is considered to be, according to Define American, “an American is an immigrant, living in the United States of America; someone who calls this country “home” based on his/her political, economic, social, and cultural idea and affiliations”. To put it simply, to be an America one must dwell in the country and have the country’s best interest at heart.
Often people assume that the first Americans came from Europe. However, the only people who can claim America as theirs and only theirs are the Native Americans. Despite this fact, they were unable to due to a series of tragic events such as being forcibly removed from their land by European immigrants. America was founded on creating new dreams and exploring possibilities. These opportunities should be open to anyone who is prepared to work hard and put America first. Since the founding of this nation, people from all over the world have dreamed of the possible opportunities here in the United States. The story was known around the world of people leaving everything they had and knew and risking it all in search for a better life. Today, immigrants share that same mentality because they are so dedicated to their dreams that they sacrifice everything they know and possess to provide better lives for themselves and their loved ones.
