What Does Jim Learn In My Antonia

In My Antonia, I believe that Jim learns more than Antonia. Her father wanted him to teach Antonia English, but during their time together Jim teaches her about other things. Antonia teaches Jim about nature and how their country was. We really don't know what Antonia learns or doesn't learn because Jim is telling the story. So we are only getting his point of view.

"People who don't like this country ought to stay at home. […] We don't make them come here" (1.13.5). Jim did not understand the hardships that immigrants went through to come to America. He was naïve in the beginning of this story because he didn't truly understand what they actually went through. Antonia tells him about their travels in getting there. Life is very difficult for the immigrants. They have to save up money in order to be able to buy the land. Their family does not necessarily already own the land.

My family and I are traveling to Nebraska to start again. As we travel, in a wagon, the roads are bumpy and rough. In some places I think they are nonexistent. I am in charge of helping set up camp in the evening when we stop for the night. We sleep either in the wagon, under the wagon, or even under the stars it just depends on the weather.

When we stop for the night I gather small twigs and branches so that we can have a fire. I must get it gathered before the sun sets. I set up the firewood and start a fire. We will cook our dinner on the open fire. We have beans and biscuits from this morning. We have been eating beans since we started this journey. I'm really starting to hate beans. When I am done the sun has set and the stars are starting to come out. My dad tells us about the stars and how many people use them to direct their travel.
