What Does Kamala Teach Siddhartha

Everybody has a different path containing different people. The people on the paths teach the most valuable lessons that are learned; therefore, the people on one's path help lay down the road that one journeys. Throughout the novella, there are many teachers that help Siddharta reach his ultimate goal. He learned to learn from himself from the Buddha, how to love from Kamala, how to deal with devastation from Vasudeva, and how to listen from the river. These lessons are all important because they helped him reach Atman. The lesson that the Buddha teaches Siddhartha is the reason for his entire journey. He teaches Siddhartha to be his own teacher; that no one can teach Siddhartha better than Siddhartha. “As Vasudeva rose from the seat on the river bank, when he looked into Siddhartha's eyes and saw the serenity of knowledge shining in them, he touched his shoulder gently in his kind protective way and said: ‘I have waited for this hour, my friend. Now that it has arrived, let me go’” (Hesse 136-137). At this point and time in the novella, Siddhartha had learned everything he could from the river. An important lesson he learned was listening.
