In “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, there was an unavoidable disease that traveled through the community. In order to stay alive, Prince Prospero gathered his favorite people and invited them all into his fortress, and the prince threw a masquerade party. Throughout the night, an ominous chime rang from the black clock in the blood red room. By the end of the night, everyone had died because no one can hide from death. Poe uses the clock, the red and black room, and the Red Death itself to symbolize that death is inevitable. The ebony clock with its black color and its swinging pendulum symbolizes death, or the countdown to it. The clock represents how man cannot prevent death in the same way that they could not stop the
