Symbolism is the most important thing in an authors’ writing and it's also known in every book you read. Although you may not noticed symbolism or you have noticed it. Symbolism brings the book all together for the reader to comprehend.

2. Symbolism Really Means: Symbolism is defined as the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. With the books that I’ve read this year my teacher had really brought out the true symbols and meanings of these books. As in symbolism is a supplemental to the story. One author for example is Ernest Hemingway who was very religious and used parts of the bible to symbolize many things in this particular book. In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway many occurrences of the life of Santiago the fisherman were similarities to the incidents recorded in the bible on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Like Santiago's badly injured hands evoke the hands of the crucified Jesus. Then at the end Santiago had hooked a fish. Which was on a Friday, in symbolic of Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified on the cross. Then the hook went into and straight through the mouth of the fish, just as the nail went through the hand of Jesus. By the second day, the old man waited for the rising of the fish to the top of the water. Then the second day after the death of Jesus, his followers awaited his resurrection and prayed, just like Santiago prayed for. By the third day, the fish rose and the old man speared and killed him. This day refers to Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead, and then ascended to heaven. Therefore, the incidents that occurred in the life of Santiago were similarities to the occurrences in the life of Jesus. Although Ernest Hemingway did not make this too obvious to the reader but it makes a lot of sense now since I had studied over it.
