When ducks are first born they imprint on their mother. Imprinting is when an animal comes to identify another animal, person, or thing as a source of food, water, and shelter. Ducklings copy every action the mother makes; If the duckling falls behind or gets lost they find another duck to imprint on. Similar to this is how Abby’s friends have “imprinted” on her, because they make decisions based on her actions and look to her for protection. Societal pressures force people to hide their differences and seek attention in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, “What Happened to the Girls in LeRoy” by Susan Dominus, and in the movie "Mean Girls" directed by Mark Waters. Attention is needed when people feel unwanted or unloved. The article “What Happened to the Girls in LeRoy” highlights the fact that the girls’ symptoms could have been to get attention. Out of the high school girls, “none had stable relationships with their biological fathers” (Dominus 4). These heartbroken girls just wanted their dad to care about them, so they faked their tics. Once the girls got “sick” their dads had to come back and love them. Abigail from The Crucible also is longing for love and attention from John Proctor. She wishes for him to love her over his wife by saying,“I know you, John. I know you. She is weeping . I cannot sleep for dreamin’; I cannot dream but I wake and walk about the house as though I’d find you coming through some door. She clutches him desperately” (Miller 23). Abigail hopes Proctor will love her again and give her attention. She desperately longs for him, so she pressures him to choose who he loves more. Proctor chooses his wife due to society. If he left his wife for Abigail he would hurt his reputation and his children's reputation because society wouldn’t accept him.
Societal pressures cause people to hide their differences and seek attention. If society forced everyone to hide their differences the world would never change. People should be independent and not need someone's constant acceptance through every obstacle of life. Once ducklings grow up they can then find
