After Jeannette gave back the ring to Billy he got angry and came to her house and fired at the children with his BB gun. The oldest, Laurie, came out with her father’s gun and fired at him but missed.
The police were called and the officer wanted everyone to go to the court house tomorrow morning. So that night the family packed up and left for phoenix. Billy serves as a catalyst for their move because without him firing the BB gun there would have been no return gun fire by Laurie. But because he did cause the situation the family is forced to skip town due to Rex not wanting to deal with the courts.
