In chapter three, which moves on from the history of worldviews, Sire now tackles what is behind the question about what holds up the world ¬–¬ he believes the answer is an ontological answer. The father could give a naturalist or theist answer to the question posed in chapter 1, and either answer would be ontological. According to Sire, up until the seventeenth century, ontology was the primary answer.
Sire explains that the two basic views (that get to the core of a worldview) are: (1) ontology precedes epistemology, and (2) epistemology precedes ontology.
