I choose topic number 2. I choose this topic because I want to talk about a important relationship in this book to me. The relationship I choose is between Atticus and the white people. This is a negative relationship because the people where Atticus lived didn’t like him because he was defending a black man Tom Robinson who was accused of rapping Mayella Ewell. During those days it was a time during segregation. This means white people and black people couldn’t do anything together. This time period was between 1849 and 1950.
I guess you are wondering who is Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer in Maycomb descended from an old local family. He has two kids Jem and Scout. When he agrees to defend Tom Robinson in a rap case. Also I bet your wondering who Mayella Ewell is, she is a surrogate wife for her father and mother for her younger siblings. She wants a better life for herself. She cant attend school because she has to stay home and take care of her younger siblings. To avoid this she tries to have affair with Tom Robinson.
In the story a man named Tom Robinson is accused of rapping and beating Mayella Ewell. In this case when a white man does something like this, this means that he is guilty automatically. In this story people called Atticus a names. They called Atticus a disgrace because he was helping the white man Tom Robinson. The word disgrace means loss of reputation or respect. Also in the book one of his own family members called him a nigger lover. Also in the book when Attics was outside of the jail reading a newspaper these men pulled up and got out the cars like they were going to do something to him.
