The Emperor Augustus wrote Res Gestae to make sure his achievements were remembered as he saw them. His document represented “an account of the deeds of his public life,” including thirty-five accomplishments beginning when he was nineteen years old and concluding shortly before his death. Augustus championed his legacy much as he did his reign, through planning and implementation. In Res Gestae, Augustus attempts to control his legacy by decreeing that he has served as an unassuming statesman, noble warrior, and beloved benefactor; ironically, his attempt reveals a dictator who is consumed with controlling everything from people to history.
