By changing the technique the hero uses to defeat his enemies, it is challenging the idea of what a hero is. As previously mentioned, a hero is traditionally thought of to be strong and in Beowulf’s case, supernaturally strong. The moment Bilbo is introduced, it is clear he does not fit that description. Nonetheless, he is hero. By having Bilbo face his enemies in such an unorthodox fashion, Tolkien creates a character like no other.
