Behind all the flamboyancy and the quirkiness that encapsulates Anderson’s films, the director is constantly challenging our own morality. A theme that runs throughout his films is family. Family dysfunction, driven either by greed or separation, is often used as a crisis. In Moonrise Kingdom, family is portrayed as being a broken mess. Suzy’s parents are caught up in marital troubles; their daughter feels that she is the sole reason of their growing separation. As shown through this film, parents nowadays do not have the time for their own children, and naturally the children subconsciously separate themselves from their parents’ lives. Anderson purposefully connects the lives of the characters to the audience as we relate to the familial issues that surround them. For us, the one thing that prevents us from achieving a closer relationship is time, and thus the director conveys the importance of family in showing the outcome of the parents’ negligence of their own daughter. We are constantly losing time for ourselves and also the people we love –we are losing family ties.
