I believe that one of the main points that Douglass was trying to make throughout his narrative is about the lengths people will go to justify and normalize systemic oppression. A good master was an oxymoron, yet slaves would argue amongst themselves over whose master was better. Using religion as a justification to treat people inhumanely is still prevalent in our society today, and I feel that this narrative serves as a warning for both the, at the time, present, but also, future audiences to see through the “false religious piety” exemplified by several of Douglass’s masters and gain a true understanding of what actual religion entails.
