Nearly 4000 years ago, there was a king named Hammurabi who ruled a city called Babylon. He ruled Babylon for almost 40 years. Along with Hammurabi came “Hammurabi’s Code.” Hammurabi’s Code was a set of 282 laws written on a large stone, called a stele. Many of the steles were placed around the kingdom so that everyone could see them no matter where they were. The code was given to Hammurabi by the god of justice, Shamash. Since the code was given to Hammurabi by the god of justice, Hammurabi’s people thought the code was just. But I’ll leave that up to you to decide. I think the laws were just because in document E, it says, “If a man has knocked out the eye of a free man, his eye shall be knocked out.” Also in document D, it says,
