Jealousy in Othello Jealousy is a demon that rips through you and takes you hostage, causing you to make irrational decisions. Some people even think jealousy is healthy because it means that you care. Acts of jealousy take place in William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Othello in three instances. Othello, the hero, succumbs to jealousy when Iago convinces him that Desdemona has been an unfaithful wife. Also, Roderigo becomes jealous of Desdemona’s occupancy with Othello. At the end of his tale to Roderigo about how he was passed over for position of Lieutenant, Iago displays his jealousy of Cassio. Therefore, jealously leads to the downfall of these characters.
Roderigo has a susceptible mind which exports his feelings for Desdemona throughout the play. Upon the subject of her occupation with Othello, he thinks he should be the Romeo to her Juliet. He lets his feelings get the best of him and makes plans with Iago to eliminate Othello, phasing out their marriage, and thus making available. Iago says to Roderigo, “Do you find some occupation to anger Cassio…”(2.1 288-89). To cause Othello’s downfall, the newly formed duo has to use Cassio. In the induction of the play, according to Iago, he was next in line to become lieutenant in the Navy, but this doesn’t happen. He thinks that Othello’s foolish mind has made a mistake to appoint Cassio this high ranking role in the Navy, and Iago vows to get revenge on him due to his jealousy. Iago states, “ I hate the moor, and it was thought abroad, that twixt my sheets has’ done my office. I know not if’t be true but I, for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if for surety.(1.3 329-33). After stating this Iago has vowed to ruin Othello’s life and everything he finds important.
