In Julius Caesar, Portia is a true and honorable wife for Brutus. It is very hard to have a wife like Portia because she shows her loyalty to Brutus even though Brutus is going to kill Caesar which is risky to both of them. Therefore, her loyalty and deep love of Brutus have proved her to be an outstanding wife. First, Portia’s loyalty makes her a true and honorable wife. Before killing Caesar, Portia has already known that something is not right with her husband because she sees her husband suffering from insomnia. After Brutus decides to kill Caesar, he does not want to tell Portia his plan for its danger. He wants to keep Portia away to ensure her safety, and he does not want her to worry about him. Surprisingly, Portia begs Brutus for the truth and promises to keep the secret. She is even willing to stab into her thigh to prove that she is loyal to Brutus. When it is the day for Brutus to execute his plan, Portia still worries about him and even sends her servant to check Brutus. “...If thy lord look well, for he went sickly forth...” ( line 15-16, Act 2 Scene 4, page 87) This quote shows Portia’s concern about Brutus’s safety. Portia also hopes that Brutus can succeed in his assassination. It is rare that a wife supports and prays for her husband to murder a nation’s leader. For Portia, she wants to always stand on her husband’s side and support him because her husband is taking a lot of risks, and she cannot let him face them alone. In Act4, we can see Portia’s love to Brutus in an alternative way from Brutus’ sadness due to her suicide. Portia swallows fire because she really misses Brutus after he leaves her in Rome. Portia is a great woman because of her love which makes her will to give up her life without Brutus
