What is Psychology?
Psychology is comprised of two Latin words. Psyche, which means Soul and Logos, which means science. Therefore, psychology basically means science of the soul. However, because the term “soul” is not easily understood or explained, led to the meaning of psychology as being the “science of behavior”.
Behavior is a measurable action that can be seen and observed. It not only refers to physical activities such as walking and talking, but also to mental activities like love, fear, and anger. The people who study these behaviors are called psychologists. The four main goals of psychology are: to describe what occurred, to explain why it occurred, to predict what is likely to occur next, and to change or prevent unwanted outcomes.
Psychology is a broad spectrum and has a wide array of subfields. Each field studying different types of behavior and why people or animals do the things they do. For example, the main type of psychology is clinical psychology. They deal with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological disorders. Cognitive psychology, Psychology of women, School psychology, Counseling psychology and Educational psychology are other types of psychology to name a few.
What do you hope to learn in this class?
