The book “The Color of Water” by James McBride, Ruth’s contradictions about her children going to a white school even though she knows that white people hate black people and her not applying for welfare but championed people who availed themselves of it, only confuses James and his siblings. Ruth sending his children to a white school only confuses them because the children knew that white people hated their kind and yet their mother is still sending them to a white school. James does not understand that her mother won’t apply for welfare even though that they are in need of it. It confuses him more that his mother support people who used welfare. Ruth’s contradiction only made her children confuse.
