General William Tecumseh Sherman's goal when cutting through Georgia and Carolina territory was to wreak havoc, lowering the moral of Confederate troops by destroying their supplies, railways, and harassing and plundering their homes. Though his methods were brutal, desertions in the Confederate army did begin to rise. Men, frightened for their families and houses, ran back to their cities from which they volunteered at.
