The American dream is considered, by most, the rise from nothing to creating yourself, the rags-to-riches story. Is the American Dream achievable? Can someone actually start with nothing and become wonderfully rich? In the book The Great Gatsby, the author F. Scott Fitzgerald makes his opinion apparent that he does not believe in the Dream. You are who you are born, and attempting to change class only leads to tragedy.
Jay Gatsby was a very rich character in the novel. The mystery of his taunted the audience of the book until Chapter 6 of the book. At that chapter, the readers find out that Gatsby came from a farm in North Dakota and did not have very much money. Gatsby worked as a janitor to make his way through college and eventually dropped out.
He worked on Lake superior the next summer fishing salmon and digging for clams. While working he meets a man whom later let Gatsby have a job as his personal assistant. The man left Gatsby $25,000, but the man’s mistress kept him from getting the money. After, Gatsby dedicated himself to becoming wealthy and successful.
