Early Life & Education Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, Shadwell Virginia. Jefferson had 9 sisters and brothers. He spent his childhood years roaming the woods and studying his books. When he was nine, he started his formal studies, boarding with a minister teacher nine months out of the year. He continued boarding school till he became sixteen, excelling in classical languages. Jefferson was one of the best educated Americans at his time. When he was seventeen, he entered the College of William and Mary, where he got the first glimpses of "the expansion of science, and of the system of things in which we are placed." He studied widely in the law, in the sciences, both ancient and modern history, literature, and philosophy.
