William Golding has a very important message in Lord of the Flies. It is that everyone has an inner evil. Deep inside we all have evil. Every person struggles between right and wrong. The book starts out with a group of innocent English school boys who are stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. They do not have any adult supervision and have to learn to take care of themselves. They create their own little society with rules and order, but everyone has his own idea of how it should be run. They start out with rules and order, but their desire to have power over others takes over and the order and civilization crumbles. The evil is in the Lord of the Flies, Roger, Jack and the beast. Jack and Roger want to get power over everyone else and show their evil side by becoming savages. The Lord of the Flies is the evil that is in all of us. The beast is the fear that causes us to do evil acts. Ralph, Simon and Piggy try to make things better. They represent the good and civilization. They needed civilization and rules. If they had civilization and rules then they could have been more successful. Golding wants to show in the Lord of the Flies that we have to make a choice between good and evil or civilization and anarchy. Golding conveys this message by having some of the characters such as Jack and Roger follow their evil side. He shows how their savage behavior causes destruction and chaos. On the other hand, he shows that Ralph, Simon and Piggy try to follow their civilized side. They try to keep order with everyone and eventually are the ones who help get
