February 27th, 8pm I took three selfies for this writing piece. Well technically four as I deicide to post one on snap chat with the caption “taking selfies for class. Fun!” I decided to look back at all of them even the one on snap chat, the first three I noticed my imperfections, my flaws, and that I probably should shave. The one on snapchat showed me a deeper meaning. In that selfie I realized that I was smiling from watching my students' performance that happened last summer. That made me realize that I am more than an image or a picture; I am a persistent, loving, creative and a role model to my students'. (6) When we look at a selfie wether our own or someone else’s, some may just glance and think “oh it's just another selfie”, while others look at it and analyze the image. A selfie has a deeper meaning we look at the smile and wonder “why was he smiling?”, if someone had messaged me and asked why, they could have heard a deeper story and see my adorable students’ performance. However these aren’t new things, these words all have a meaning that been around for ages for example “yolo”, “you only live once” people have been doing stuff that may cause death since that’s how the term was used long before. Even though the term died the action hasn’t. This goes to an argument in Syme’s piece. “This is why they think selfies are a phase, something they can wish away. Whoever they are, and for whatever reason they hate selfies, they are wrong.”(1) Some people just assume that a selfie is something that’s for this generation only. Something that will disappear in a few years such as the “Harlem shake", well the difference between the two, is "Harlem Shake" was actually just a trend that happened to gain publicity during 2013, but a selfie has been around forever. The first camera and picture taken is older than me and you combined, which wasn’t used for selfies or taking a picture of one person as it was really expensive to use but when they developed and introduced cameras that you could set a timers, people started taking selfies before the word even existed. Marian Hooper Adam or Clover developed pictures during the late 1800s. She would cover her face but nonetheless she took the photo herself and of herself only, that in my book would be considered as a selfie. (2) So in retrospect
