The American Dream plays a powerful and very significant role in “The Great Gatsby”. To many people, like Fitzgerald, the American Dream is starting with nothing and from there, working towards happiness and prosperity. Fitzgerald exemplifies and goes into more depth on that idea when Gatsby himself is brought into the story. In chapter 4, Fitzgerald informs the reader on Gatsby's past. He tells reader that though Gatsby is rich now, that was not always the case and that he did in fact work his way up to where he is now. For most people in the United States, the American Dream is ultimately unattainable and constantly out of reach. No matter what an individual might be looking for, they're always reaching for more. This song grew in relevance and has become very important when discussing issues on today's society. The media plays a major role in everyone's lives. Green Day believes that America is “one nation controlled by the media”. People do what they think will please society. With everything getting advertised on television, individuality is decreasing because people are constantly being convinced that if they aren't keeping up with the new and improved styles, their relevance will decrease. Most people are losing themselves in the process of succeeding in the American Dream. Society controls our dreams and what we make of it. Many say that there are no limits when it comes to accomplishing your dreams but that is not true, everything is done to a certain extent, including the American Dream. It is clear that in today's society, most people are willing to follow blindly if it means getting money.
