Loreta was a women who dressed as a man to go into battle. She was in four battles that where during the civil war she fought for the confederates dressed as a man.The first battle she was in was the first battle of Bull Run. The second battle she was in was the Battle of Ball's Bluff.The third battle she was in it was the battle of Fort Donelson. The fourth battle Loreta was in it was the battle of Shiloh. These battles where all during the civil war that happened from 1861 to 1865.

On October 20,1861 McClellan ordered General Charles stone to send a group of scouts across the Potomac River to see the positions of the confederate army. The confederate army was Nathan Evan’s troops the troops were near Leesburg. The inexperienced leader captain Chase Philbrick mistook a line of trees for a line of tents. He then reported that he saw an ungraded confederate camp. Col. Charles Devens was sent early the 21st across the river so they could attack the camp. When they saw that the line of tents were actually trees they encountered a Mississippi army then a skirmish began. Col. Edward Baker which was a US senator decide to help Devens but they only had four boats to transport men. Union men arrived very slowly. Evans used the delay of the federals to organize his men for when Col. Baker was killed in the afternoon. When baker was killed the union's resistance crumbled. The confederates drove the Yankees over the bluff into the Potomac River. At the river, many died and hundred surrendered to not risk their life trying to escape through the river. This battle was a small battle but this battle had major political implications that would haunt the union troops for the rest of the civil
